There are plenty of ways to take a break from the stress of job during the workday, but in the last few years online gaming has become increasingly popular. The increase in popularity of online gaming is at least partly due to the increase in availability of online games that can easily be played without downloading anything.
A few years ago there was a limited selection of online games that could really perform without a download. The games that were available were pretty basic and usually didn't perform well, with jerky performance and slow play being frequent complaints. Unfortunately, downloading games at work wasn't a viable option at most offices, so game designers responded by improving the quality and number of online games available. They were actively courting gamers who wanted to play but couldn't download anything onto an office computer.
Today's online games play just as quickly as downloaded games, and you can choose from among hundreds of popular titles. These games are just as complex and rich in detail as their downloadable counterparts, but don't present any problem when being used at the office. They don't eat up memory or breach any potential download regulations at work.
The improved graphics, speed and quality of online games has contributed to their increased popularity, giving Internet surfing and opening emails a run for their money. Over 55 percent of employees admit to opening personal email at work regularly, with just as many people surfing the Internet. Over 40 percent of employees play online games at work, usually during their lunch hour or after they are off the clock. Casual games such as cards and puzzle solving games are the most popular with employees because they're quick and easy, giving players a break from heavy brain work. It seems that online games are a sort of "coffee break" for the brain.
